Surrendering negative thoughts could be very difficult for most people because they can’t see how much negative thinking they actually do. If it were easy there would be a lot less angry or depressed people in the world.
For centuries researchers have shown that negative thinking leads to emotional and physical problems. It doesn’t create bad people, it creates a need to see its an open invitation for an elephant to sit on their bed. For example, in order to lay down to rest they would first need to remove the elephant (or the negative thoughts) from off the bed. If they tried to push past the elephant and crawl under the blankets, trying to ignore the elephant exists, there would be no room to rest.
If you are a person who believes in a higher authority, it might be easier to surrender; to give up, abandon, or relinquish the negative thoughts, but it usually takes more discipline than a one time surrender to keep them at bay. It takes re-training your brain.
Here are a few tips to try at work or home.
1. Keep a pad of paper and a pen handy. What are your thoughts right now? Listen to them. Are they reminding you of how stupid you were, how poorly you performed, why you can’t do anything right, etc? Write it down. Why? You might be surprised to see how big your elephant really is.
2. Find replacement values of positive thoughts. Ask yourself, “Why am I loved?” “How am I creative?” “What am I grateful for?” or make statements like “I choose to love that person.” Write the answers to these questions down. Place them strategically in spots where you can see them. Start with your bed.
3. Replacing negative habits often takes 30 days repetition to break. Repeat it morning noon and night to allow progress to come more quickly. Disallow your brain to tell you its too much work.
4. Remove all sources of negative media from your life while you are trying to promote a more positive outlook. Others will inform you of the negative media you might miss out on don’t worry. Negative thinkers thrive on negative news.
The elephant doesn’t belong in your bed. It is time to replace those negative thoughts so you can be guided into all truth for the rest of your life, but it’s up to you.
