A New Definition for Leadership – Be True To You!

I’m giving Leadership a NEW DEFINITION.

Lead·er·ship - [lee-der-ship] – The ability to be true to yourself no matter what age, race, sex or economic standing and living so that you are able to lead a potent life and influencing others in a positive way without the worry of what others will think.

This video is only a few minutes long but it happens to be so true to my definition that I wanted to post it for you to see.  This is the essence of leadership and follower-ship in my opinion and I want to thank my friend Derek Sivers for allowing me to post it.  After you’ve seen it, please comment below if you agree that by Being True to YOU, you can Lead in Potent Ways!

Leave your comment below and share this video with your friends.

Connecting to community can be profound, particularly when it is your community of followers who want a transformation in their lives and hope that you can help provide it. Our BFF calls can help! See above right for details.

  1. Yes, Kellie, I agree totally with your definition. To be a real leader requires being yourself. Nobody follows the example of someone who is trying to follow in someone else’s shoes. You go after what you want, you experience those things that give meaning to your life, and you don’t worry what people think. That doesn’t mean you need to shock people or do something daring or even different. You do what is YOU, and others are attracted to you because you are a leader just by virtue of being yourself! Nice peek at true leaders, Kellie.

David you are a good example of this yourself. I visit your site often for new insights from you because you are coming from your heart on much of what you talk about. We often let our experiences in life dictate whether we stay stuck or move forward. In my life it comes down to choice because that is exactly what the creator gave us. Thank you for sharing your thoughts here, as always you are a joy to have dropping by.

    Interesting Kellie.
That couple sure is having fun, (Chaplin-style in my view). And yes they were in the moment and not concerned about what others would think. An interesting new definition of leadership you proposed.
    Thanks, Stew

Kellie, I absolutely love this video. There’s nothing better than stating off the day with a good laugh and you helped me to do that this morning.

    Thank you!

And I totally agree, being true to you is no. 1 in Leadership, then to take it one step further, you impart that on others that you are leading to bring out the best in them.

Great post to start the day with. Thanks again for the good feelings.

    Hi Kellie,

What a lovely warming video, isnt that what life is all about ~ being comfortable in our own skin and sharing our talents with the world. I used to be very self conscious about myself and what others thought of me. I have now learnt to be happy with who I am and offer what I do have with others that resonate with me. We all have something unique to offer after all.

Thank you for sharing this, I feel uplifted just watching the video.

  6. Hey Kellie,

Wonderful post and I loved the video. It doesn’t matter what your age as long as you lead by example. If you worry about what others think you will have to settle for a life of mediocrity.

Your post reminds me of the “18/40/60 Rule” At eighteen, we worry about what everybody is thinking about us. At forty, we don’t give a damn about what anybody thinks about us. And at sixty, we realize that nobody’s been thinking about us!

People spend their life worrying and thinking about themselves but we need to at least adopt the 40 rule in order to achieve our own dreams!

OMG! I adore this video! I think it speaks to leadership and also to teamwork and respect over a lifetime… it is so beautiful to see them re-act in unison with humor and understanding of each other, playing a tune that at one time was as ripping ragtime jaunt… i love it!

Kellie, thank you for the reminder that to be a true leader, someone people would want to follow, requires us to be 100% authentic. People are attracted to us when we come through with integrity.

    Great post!
