How many times in your life has someone asked you if you know what your purpose is? Does it bother you to not know?
May I share with you a simple way you can find out what your ‘why’ or your purpose?
Get on track with where you might want to be headed in life and perhaps even start a new career or a new focus. All you need is a piece of paper and a pen and some quiet moments in order to do this exercise below. It might surprise you to find out that what you are doing right now is completely off target to what you are meant to do. Give it a try…
STEP 1:
Write down 3 individuals you know, and who know you
example:
1. God (this is acceptable)
2. Melissa (school friend)
3. Mrs. DePaiva (teacher)
STEP 2:
Write down 3 people you know, but who don’t know you
example:
1. Ghandi
2. Mother Theresa
3. Jim Rhon
STEP 3:
Next to their names, add what you respect or deeply appreciate about each of them the most from both groups.
1. God – unconditional love
2. Melissa (school friend) – her courage and strength
3. Mrs. DePaiva (friend’s mother) – her deep level of forgiveness and deep wisdom
1. Ghandi – Peaceful warrior
2. Mother Theresa – humanity driven
3. Jim Rhon – intelligence and candor
STEP 4:
Now, make a list of all those qualities you have written in a completely separate list.
example:
1. unconditional love
2. courage and strength
3. deep level of forgiveness and deep wisdom
4. peaceful warrior
5. humanity driven
6. intelligence and candor
STEP 5:
Read this list out loud (at least one time through) and put the words “I have” or “I am” before each word as you read it.
STEP 6:
Recognize that what we often appreciate in others are similar attributes we either have or want to see in ourselves. Consider this; we can discover, or create the possibilities of our higher purpose when declaring what we see on the inside, not by what we try so hard to do on the outside.
Going one step further you might ask yourself these questions:
- What kind of work would you have to do in order to serve in this capacity?
- What kind of value can you bring to others by living out those qualities you see?
- What field of expertise do you want to learn more about to enhance these qualities that can bring value to others?
These are just examples for you to use if you struggle with clarity in knowing what you want or don’t want in your life. Can it help you to narrow down your purpose, or let you know what your core values are by using this method? I believe it does but you are the only one who can listen to what you hear on the inside and take action.
Love yourself and the qualities you see within, and others will naturally want to know what that special ‘zing’ is in your spirit. For me, it is holy, for you it might just be the very thing that puts hope back in your life.
Maybe you too will be able to say that the most inspiring thing is when you look inside your heart and like what you see.
As always, I wish you joy and peace.

Kellie,
When I was first introduced to the idea of finding my purpose, I had no idea where to start. You have made clear, easy steps to bring it all together. Wonderful!
Thanks for sharing. This made my day,

Kellie, I really like this post. This is an exercise anyone could do to really dig down and discover what their purpose is — or could be — if they are still in discovery stage. I am going to do this one myself just to see what I discover! And I am also going to do this with my children, just to see what they discover, too.
As always, you have given your readers a wonderful gift!

I’m glad you enjoyed it. I cannot take credit for it as Alex Mandossian was the one who reminded me of it but I had done something exactly like it when I was younger and never forgot what it meant to me. I’ve often thought of the words that applied many times over and have lived into it as much as I could. Great direction starter for sure. Thank you for sharing it with your kids! That’s what it was meant for! By the way MaryLou are you registered for the parenting summit this Friday? It’s free and I’m one of their interviewee’s in case you want to hear it. CLICK HERE

Kellie,
This is a great post in self evaluating what’s important to us and get us thinking about how we can use those to create a bigger goal for ourselves. It’s nice steps, easy to chew on and to accomplish . Thanks for sharing your insight to help others take a peek in the mirror to see if they are on the right track.

Kinda reminds me of something Brian Tracey did in the physicology of success. But what you do there is ask yourself what you want to be and do if there were no obstacles such as money or fears. Really what can stop us other than ourselves?
Great Post!

Hi Andrew and welcome! You know I’ve never spent time listening to Brian Tracey’s messages but I’m pretty sure anyone who is successful knows how to implement these types of strategies into their lives. I say strategy because it is something you never forget once you say them out loud. They are declarations that can point you in the direction of your ‘why’ so it’s powerful stuff. Alex Mandossian did it for his students as well. Another great guy I might add!

Thank you for creating an awesome EASY way to help people focus on creating the life they want for themselves! I learned over the years so it all happened gradually, explaining it in a simple format seemed overwhelming! You did it! Thank you!! I look forward to hearing more from you! I have your blog bookmarked!

It’s always good to take stock and keep yourself on track. This is a great way to hold your feet to the fire and make sure you’re working on your passion. I think this is good to do on a regular basis. And really excellent for working with new clients to see where they’re coming from, and to let them get to know you a bit.
Thanks for this new tool to work with Kellie. I’ll use it.

Kellie,
That was a great exercise — particularly the affirmations section. We are hit with information overload on a daily basis and it is very easy to forget the simple steps, like affirming yourself.
Thanks for the perfect reminder!
