I took my teenage daughter to a town about 50 miles south of us to meet with the other models of Pure Fashion International. Its an organization that focuses on the inner beauty of young women and their character and I highly recommend it for any young lady wanting to enrich her life and engage her more with family activities.
Before we left the house that day she was dallying in her room and so I called to her saying that because of the snowy roads we might want to leave a few minutes earlier. I heard her mumble something in response, that sounded more like an a croaking frog than a girl saying “okay” but one can never be sure what is said when something comes from a teenager’s room. I pictured her neck stretching upward to look at a little red mark on her face in the mirror or maybe a lone hair that was out of place. When she finally did come out she looked stunning to me. Her normally thick wavy hair had been straightened and her eyes had just a hint of mascara on the now curled eyelashes. The shock must have been on my face because she asked me what was wrong. I couldn’t help staring at this once gangly little girl now so lovely in stature and croak back in the same frog voice, “Uh…I’m okay.”
There are times when you look at your children and see just how much they’ve grown up and you realize what little time you have left with them, to guide or influence them under your roof. At those moments you just want to freeze time but you know you can’t stop it, you can only watch it happen and pray that this moment remains grounded in your thoughts forever while they’re still young.
I thought of how our Creator must be delighted when his people finally stop to realize… that time is neither for us nor against us… it just is… and we’ll either embrace it, complain that there isn’t enough of it, fight for more of it, or ignore it altogether. If there is one thing I’ve learned about time, especially when it comes to my family, it is that staying focused and present in the moment when they’re around has taught me how to cherish it….and for just a moment….I believe I can actually get it to stand still.
